Obesity is a serious, debilitating disease that develops slowly over time as excess fat builds up in the body. It is a chronic disease with multiple and complex causes, not just a problem of overeating. Obesity is the most common form of malnutrition in the Western world.

While obesity affects a person’s physical appearance, it also increases the risk for developing a serious medical condition. Such conditions include diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, certain cancers, and arthritis. The increase in chronic health conditions caused by obesity is comparable to that seen in 20 years of aging.

Obesity is widespread in the United States, as it affects nearly two-thirds of the population, and ranks as the second leading cause of preventable death in the nation. However, this problem is not limited to America, but is rather a global epidemic.

At Lourdes Bariatric and Weight Wellness Center, we provide the education, resources, and support needed to combat obesity, so our patients can achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
