Obesity is a serious, debilitating disease that develops slowly over time as excess fat builds up in the body. While obesity affects a person’s physical appearance, it also puts them at a higher risk for developing a serious medical condition. Such conditions include diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, certain cancers, and arthritis.
Most patients will begin to lose weight rapidly after a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This weight loss will gradually slow down until you reach a stable weight about a year or two after surgery. However, to maintain these results and avoid complications, you must continue to exercise and eat according to the guidelines provided for you by your dietitian. Generally, the results of surgery are positive and extend to many areas of your life. You will likely feel better about yourself, have more energy, and be in better physical condition.
Not everyone is a candidate for weight loss surgery, and in order to be considered, you need to meet certain criteria. To qualify for surgery you must be at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or greater, or be diagnosed with a life-threatening disease and have a BMI of 35 or greater.
If you think you may be a candidate for surgery and would like more information, we invite you to attend one of our free informational seminars. Contact Lourdes Bariatric Weight and Wellness Center for details on our next seminar.
